THE SKIN OF OUR TEETH

BY THORNTON WILDER
This show was my first experience on a production team. I went into this show not even knowing what a dramaturg was, but I came out as "the best dramaturg this school has ever seen"-the director. My job was to connect this confusing plot with with actors and then the audience. I created an immersive lobby experience and wrote a letter that explained the biblical references that went into the program.

LOBBY DESIGN

There were two designs in total. The audience would walk in on a scene of a family home preparing for the ice age; heavy winter coats and fire wood could be seen all around the lobby. At intermission, the audience would come out of the theatre to see a post war set up; the second lobby had military jackets and destroyed furniture from the first design. This was supposed to set the audience up for the third act.

The "kids section" had finger painted images that depicted events and characters in the story. Paintings included pictures of the family's pet dinosaur and biblical references that were in the show like Adam and Eve. This section gave the audience incite on the characters before the show even started.

This design was extremely complex, but it allowed me to design for immersive theatre. I stayed true to the look and themes of the show and connected the audience with the show before they even walked in the doors. The lobby design isn't always the dramaturg's duty, but I was able to complete my task of making the audience understand the show, through the lobby.
